“Union”:
The history of our congregation begins in 1873 when a church was started and built by the Disciples of Christ. In 1905 it was leased to the new Union Church in Christ congregation which was formed when the Disciples of Christ and Baptists agreed to unite. Small groups of Presbyterians and Congregationalists also joined in this new union.
“Presbyterian”:
On April 18, 1945 Union Church affiliated with the United Presbyterian Church denomination and became Union Presbyterian Church, which is now a part of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Presbyterians trace their history to the 16th century and the Protestant Reformation. Our heritage, and much of what we believe, began with John Calvin (1509-1564), whose writings crystallized much of the Reformed thinking that came before him.
Union Presbyterian Church purchased two acres of land on the northeast side of Monroe in 1957 and groundbreaking for the new church was celebrated on June 5, 1982. The new church was dedicated on September 11, 1983. The congregation celebrated our 25th anniversary in this location in September, 2008.
Union Presbyterian Church seeks to reflect and share God's love with our community and the world, as expressed in our Mission Statement: In grateful response to God's love for us as revealed in Christ and in response to Jesus' commandment "that you love one another" (John 13:34-35) we at Union seek to faithfully live out this command in our daily lives. With a firm belief that the mission field is no longer limited to foreign countries but is in our own community we offer not only our financial resources, but also the gift of our time and talent.
